What Expungement Does
Expungement is a court process that removes arrests, charges and convictions from your criminal record. Once a record is expunged, in most situations you may lawfully answer that you were not arrested or convicted of the offense, and the expunged record is not available to employers, landlords or the general public.
Who May Qualify
Eligibility depends on the offense, how much time has passed, and your overall record. New Jersey's waiting periods and eligibility rules have been amended several times in recent years, so the current rules should be confirmed against your specific record rather than assumed.

Filing for expungement means petitioning the Superior Court, notifying multiple agencies, and attending a hearing. The process typically takes several months from filing to entry of the order.
